The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.
There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in the WACA.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.
"We know that the clock is ticking and multiple considerations involved, not just the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. If not, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.
He has a history of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.
He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.
Contingency Plans
If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."
"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the opening match as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
